Frequently Asked Questions
How is United Way of Mason County different from other charitable organizations?
What is the relationship between United Way of Mason County and Michigan Association of United Ways and United Way Worldwide?
Do all United Way organizations operate and fund the same programs?
No, there are 1,400 United Way organizations throughout the country, which are operated by a local volunteer Board of Directors. United Way organizations decide what types of programs they are going to fund, based on the needs of their respective communities. Thus, it is important to contact your local United Way, if you have questions as to whether a particular program is receiving or not receiving funding, because what is occurring at one United Way, may not be occurring at others.
What is the process for requesting funding through United Way of Mason County?
United Way of Mason County has an “open” Request for Proposal process. This means that any program can apply for funding, as long as, it is provided through a local non-profit organization and is focusing on achieving specific outcomes in the areas of:
• Adults and Families living well and self-sufficiently or
• Children and Youth achieving their potential.
The organization must complete the Request for Proposal on an annual basis for the program to be considered for funding from one year to the next. A program will not be considered for funding if the organization does not submit a Request for Proposal, complete it in its entirety, or does not meet the eligibility criteria.
The proposal is evaluated by a group of local volunteers and a recommendation is made to the United Way of Mason County Board of Directors regarding whether or not a program should be awarded funding, and if so, how much.
If I stop working, what happens to payroll deduction?
A pledge is made in good faith and is based on an individual’s earnings. Should a person stop being employed, they are completely and immediately absolved of the pledge for the period. Currently, our uncollectable pledge rate is less than 5%.
Is my United Way contribution tax-deductible?
Yes, your United Way contribution is deductible on your federal income tax return, if you itemize deductions. To substantiate your pledge through payroll deduction, retain the contributor receipt copy of your pledge form and your payroll record of total deduction. For cash payments under $250.00, your canceled check is the only required documentation. For payments of $250.00 or more, United Way of Mason County will mail you a receipt.
